Basic knowledge of hex head screws
A hexagonal head screw is a threaded fastener with a hexagonal head. Of course, traditional screws with recessed drivers have rounded heads. Hex cap screws differ in that they have hexagonal heads without grooves. The sides are evenly spaced to form a hexagon.
Hexagon head screws and hexagon head bolts
When describing threaded fasteners with hexagonal heads, the terms "hexagonal head screw" and "hexagonal head bolt" are often used synonymously. That being said, bolts are typically designed for use with one or more nuts, whereas screws are not. Some screws can also create their own threads during installation. In contrast, bolts must fit into the existing threads of a machine or object. Even with these subtle differences, many people still use the terms "hex cap screws" and "hex cap bolts" interchangeably.
Advantages of hexagon head screws
Hex head screws have a hexagonal shape that provides more torque than traditional round head screws. You cannot install or remove them using standard screwdriver bits such as flat or Phillips. Instead, you have to use a ratchet and socket combination. Also known simply as a socket wrench, it allows you to install a socket bit on the head of a hex screw. Once positioned, you can turn the socket wrench to install or remove the hex head screw. A socket wrench will clamp all six sides of the head, allowing for more torque.
Hex cap screws are also less likely to come off than traditional hex cap screws. When installing or removing conventional screws, the screw heads may become dislodged. When the drill bit is placed in the drive groove of the head, it is possible to damage the screw during installation or removal. Hex head screws distribute this rotational force on all six sides, making delamination less likely to occur.
