They are among the most widely used lifting and rigging products and play a key role in industrial lifting, hoisting, towing, and anchoring.  Regardless of the type of eye bolt in question, they all share similar core features that enable them to lift equipment. The primary anatomy of an eye bolt is:

Eye - a loop that may be formed by bending the shank or by forging

Shank - a threaded shaft beneath the eye

Shoulder (not present on all eye bolts) - a larger diameter section between the eye and the shank that adds strength

      Eye bolts are used wherever there is a need to create a strong, secure attachment point. The bolt shank fixes the eye to a structure, machine, vehicle, or other component; rigging hardware then attaches to the eye loop and connects to the component that needs moved or anchored. They can be found in a wide range of applications, including:

1. Lifting and Rigging:
Eye bolts are often used in lifting applications to create anchor points for hoists, cranes, and other lifting equipment. The eye allows for the attachment of hooks, slings, or other rigging hardware.

2. Safety and Security:
In safety applications, eye bolts can be used to secure objects or provide tie-down points for ensuring equipment or cargo does not shift during transport. This is common in trucking, shipping, and construction.

      Safe eye bolt use starts before installation. They should first be inspected to ensure that the eye bolt is undamaged and suitable for the job.

1. Ensure the eye and the shank are free from bends or distortions.

2. Verify that the eye bolt's working load limit (WLL) or rated capacity (RC) is sufficient to support the expected load and any accompanying rigging components. 

3. Ensure the eye bolt has not been modified or machined. Removing material from an eye bolt can reduce its WLL.

4. Verify that the shank's threaded section has the same thread diameter and pitch as the mating hole or nut. Do not attempt to force an eye bolt into an incompatible thread.

5. Ensure that the threads on the shank and receiving hole are clean and free of debris.

6. Ensure the load is applied in line with the plane of the eye. You may have to use washers as shims to align the eye correctly.

 

       Eye bolts are versatile fasteners used in a wide range of applications from lifting and hoisting to anchoring and securing. Their design facilitates easy attachment to cables, hooks, and chains, making them a vital component in many industries, including construction, marine, and home improvement.
