Socket head cap screws
Socket head cap screws are used in applications where space is limited. They have cylindrical heads and internal wrench features (mainly hex sockets) and can be used where external wrench fasteners are not required. They are used in critical vehicle applications, machine tools, tool and die, earth moving and mining machinery and a wide range of engineering applications. The most important reasons for the increasing use of hexagon socket head cap screws in industry are safety, reliability and economy. This article describes the 1936 and 1960 series of socket head cap screws, benefits of socket head cap screws, product and dimensional standards, benefits of Unbrako socket head cap screws,
1936 Series and 1960 Series
This term is commonly used in the United States. The original configuration of socket head cap screws does not maintain a consistent relationship between nominal shank diameter, head diameter and socket size throughout the range of sizes available. This limits the performance potential of certain sizes. In the 1950s, an American manufacturer of socket head cap screws conducted extensive research to optimize performance based on geometry, fastener material strength, and application. These studies yielded consistent size relationships across the size range. Eventually, these relationships were accepted as industry standards, and the year of acceptance (1960) was used to determine optimal designs. The term 1936 series was chosen to identify older styles for replacement requirements.
Advantages of hexagon socket head cap screws
Compared with ordinary fasteners, hexagon socket head cap screws of the same size can obtain the same clamping force in one joint.
Since fewer screws are needed for a given job, fewer holes need to be drilled and tapped.
The weight is reduced because fewer screws are used.
Since the cylindrical head of the socket head screw requires less space than the hex head and does not require additional wrench space, the component size is smaller and therefore the weight will be reduced.
