Stainless steel polishing uses flexible polishing tools and abrasive particles or other polishing media to modify the surface of the workpiece. Polishing cannot improve the dimensional accuracy or geometric shape accuracy of the workpiece, but is intended to obtain a smooth surface or mirror gloss. Sometimes it is also used to eliminate gloss (matting). Usually a polishing wheel is used as a polishing tool. The polishing wheel is generally made of multiple layers of canvas, felt or leather, with metal discs clamped on both sides. The rim is coated with a polishing agent evenly mixed with micro-powder abrasives and grease.
When polishing stainless steel, the high-speed rotating polishing wheel (circumferential speed above 20 meters/second) presses against the workpiece, causing the abrasive to roll and micro-cut the workpiece surface, thereby obtaining a bright machined surface. The surface roughness is generally up to Ra0.63~0.01 micron; when using non-greasy matting polish, the bright surface can be matted to improve the appearance.
When producing bearing steel balls in large quantities, the drum polishing method is often used. During rough throwing, a large number of steel balls, lime and abrasives are placed in an inclined tank-shaped drum. When the drum rotates, the steel balls and abrasives are randomly rolled and collided in the drum to remove the surface convex front and reduce the surface roughness. For the purpose, a margin of about 0.01 mm can be removed.
Among them, during fine polishing, steel balls and fur fragments are placed in a wooden barrel and rotated continuously for several hours to obtain a dazzling and shiny surface. The polishing of the precision linear ruler is performed by immersing the processed surface in the polishing liquid. The polishing liquid is mixed with chromium oxide powder and emulsion with a particle size of W5~W0.5. The polishing wheel is made of evenly degreased wood or special fine felt. Its movement trajectory is a uniform and dense network. The surface roughness after polishing is not greater than Ra0.01 micron. Observe under a microscope with 40 times magnification. No surface defects. There are also methods such as electrolytic polishing.
