Square nuts can be used in channels or welded to other steel products. A square nut is basically a four-sided nut. Compared to regular hex nuts, square nuts have more surface contact with the part they're holding. This means they're less likely to loosen over time, but they're also tougher to tighten securely. So, while they're harder to install, they stay in place better after repeated use.
Square nuts usually go with square-headed bolts. To protect against damage from their sharp edges and make the connection stronger, you'd often pair them with flat washers. They're installed on the opposite side of the material being fastened. With the bolt head or screw head on the other side, this setup helps press the materials together for a tight fit.
