Serrated lock nuts provides better vibration resistance than a standard hex nut.
The serrations on the flange will scratch or mar a surface. If you're using them on a painted or coated surface (or moisture could be an issue), it is best to choose a fastener that will not remove the coating and expose the mating surface to the possibility of corrosion.
