Products Description

Stainless-Steel-Cotter-Pin-03

Cotter pins, also known as split pins and cotter keys, are a steel formed pin inserted into a drilled hole of a clevis pin or other mating assembly. The pin has a split end that is separated to secure the part after insertion. Most cotter pin installations are simple, quick processes that usually only requires simple tools like pliers. Simply insert the split end into a pre-drilled hole, clasp the extended prong with a pair of pliers, and bend it backwards until it wraps around the mating fastener. Bend the shorter prong back in a similar manner - this will lock the cotter key in place.

Cotter pins are used with castle nuts to lock the nut onto a bolt and prevent it from spinning loose accidentally. They are usually made of soft metal, so they can be bent by hand or pliers while still making them difficult to remove.

Cost Efficiency: It is a low-cost fastening option compared to other fastening pins, especially if you do not need to reuse the part. When they are used to keep nuts in place on bolts, they increase the value of the application by providing a more secure connection.

01.What are cotter pins used for?

The cotter pin is used as a locking device to hold the pin or castle nut in place. They are inserted into the opening or slot of the fastener assembly to lock the assembly in place, usually by bending the cotter pin.

02. Are cotter pins one time use?

As a general rule, cotter pins should not be reused as the extra bending weakens the pin. This can lead to the pin failing where a new pin would not result in a broken lock allowing the nut to spin loose.

03. What is the proper way to bend a cotter pin?

We recommend using a pair of pliers to bend the cotter pin legs around the assembly to minimize the chances of the cotter pin legs snagging on anything.
